Wooster School, Arkansas
Our community is very sport oriented and enjoys attending the many athletic events sponsored by our school. After attending the first few football games of the season, the club members started complaining that there wasn't anything to place the plastic drink bottles in at the games. Instead of just being upset, they took action and started a recycling program for the athletic events held at our school. We researched about how adding plastic to our landfill harms the environment. We had guest speakers and other volunteers help educate us on how to start a program at our school.Although we were excited, we still needed funding to help us with the program. With the help of some parents involved in banking and serving on various boards, we learned how to write a proposal and presented it to our Waste Management Board. We were successful and received 20 recycling bins to use at the athletic events! It was amazing to see the support of our school administration, parents, students, and fans as we began this challenge. We collected data and found that we were able to recycle 34% of the waste at football games and 28% of the waste at basketball games...we made a difference!
