Explorer and Discovery Elementary Schools
Williamston, MI

Here at Explorer and Discovery Elementary Schools, we are recycling styrofoam trays, cups and bowls at breakfast and lunch.  Fourth and fifth graders help out during breakfast and lunch to help clean and stack the trays, but all students from DK to fifth grade participate by bringing up their trays to us to clean.  All students have an awareness that it is a good idea to keep things out of landfills and make this earth a better place.

Dart Container in Mason is where  we take our trays once a week.  We recycle over 400 trays a day and we are starting to recycle plastic of numbers 1-7 which we take to Michigan State University and tin cans to keep them out of landfills, also.

Students measure and graph the styrofoam every day after lunch.  We have recycled almost 11 cubic yards since we started measuring in January.  As far as the plastic recycled, we are up to 31 pounds of plastic recycled, but we didn't begin measuring until April.
