Our school theme this year was "Going Green at Greenland Pines". We began a recycling initiative in which our Planet Patrol members got around each morning to collect paper to recycle. On Mondays, our principal shares a green fact of the week over the morning announcements, In addition to these year long activities, we have had several other green events. Planet Patrol hosted a paper drive where they collected 1.5 tons of paper We had a waste free reading festival revolving around the book, The Great Kapok Tree. Each grade level was responsible for coming up with two booths to promote literacy as well as being green. We also had a recycle bin decorating contest. A member of GCA came out and judged the buckets. We had an entire green week during the week of St. Patrick's Day. During green week, our school had a theme for each day. A couple of examples are: "The world would be a brighter place if we all recycled! Wear sunglasses to school" and "We tip our hats to those who reduce, reuse and recycle. Wear a ball cap to school!" The members of Planet Patrol visited each classroom to read recycling books as well as remind the teachers and students of ways they can be green at home and school. We had a poster contest where the classes were asked to create a poster about recycling using recyclable materials. The entire school wearing their school shirts with the recycle logo on it culminated the week.
