B. Detailed Letter about all GEF National Green Week Sustainability Themes

Date

To Staff:

(Your school’s name) is pleased to participate in exciting sustainability education opportunities sponsored by the Green Education Foundation (GEF)! These lessons, activities and eco-challenges will educate our children on how simple changes in behavior can impact the future of our planet. The objective is to spotlight sustainability learning.  Whether you take advantage of one or several of GEF's educational resources, there are many ways to optimize the participation of our school in GEF programs. Below are options to help you easily plan and implement sustainability education in your classroom.

To participate in National Green Week, review the available Sustainability Themes and choose one for this year:

1. Waste Reduction Challenge
This program is designed to make people aware of the implications of creating excess waste and identifies the ways we can all work together to reduce waste and recycle. Included are instructions to conduct a Waste-Free Snack Challenge or start a recycling program at your school

2. Green Energy Challenge
The Green Energy Challenge lessons section provides teacher friendly, standards-based lessons about renewable and nonrenewable energy including solar, wind, biofuel, and electricity. Teachers can find directions to conduct audits of energy, water, and trash for their schools. Also included are posters and reminders about conserving electricity.

3. Green Thumb Challenge
The Green Thumb Challenge is the largest youth gardening initiative in history, calling on schools and youth groups to plant gardens that play a role in standards-based education and healthy habits.  This section includes resources and tools about building, planting, maintaining, and harvesting a school garden.

4. Sustainable Water Challenge
This program aims to educate students on the importance of our planet's most valuable resource and identify the ways in which we can all conserve water in our homes and schools.

5. I Ride Green
I Ride Green invites participants to start easy-to-adopt sustainable transportation habits that can lead to lifelong healthy behaviors. Participants, including families, are asked to pledge to make permanent changes to their behaviors.

6. Green Building Program
The Green Building Program educates K-12 students on green building attributes and benefits, providing them with the educational resources necessary to understand, identify, and improve environmental inefficiencies within their own school buildings.

I would like to personally thank each of you for participating in this sustainability education program.  For more information about GEF please visit www.greeneducationfoundation.org or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
