National Green Week Overview

This is how schools prepared for National Green Week and how you can too for the 2011 program!
1. Principals sent out a letter to teachers to educate them on the program.
2. Visit the NGW curriculum section for National Green Week posters, activities, themes and daily lessons for each grade.
3. Investigate a new or improved GEF recycling program for your school!
4. Check out Green Energy Challenge lessons and how to prepare for a school energy audit.
5. Adopt-a-Plant for your classroom (complete with adoption papers!). All NGW participants will be emailed a 50% off coupon good towards an indoor plant at Lowe's.
GEF provides all the educational content for the program including standards-based environmental lessons that are easily incorporated into science, math, language arts, social studies, and creative arts curriculum. Here are the GEF eco-challenges that schools can participate in during National Green Week 2011:
Waste-Free Snacks & Lunches: Students nationwide will participate in the largest school based waste-reduction program in history by pledging to carry their drinks, snacks and home packed lunches in reusable containers for the week. The combined totals will be tallied and posted on the GEF website on Earth Day 2011 (April 22). Please review procedures here!
Green Thumb Challenge: Join the largest nationwide gardening initiative in history calling on schools and youth groups to plant 10,000 gardens in 2010. Whether indoor, outdoor, rooftop or window box, in a pot or on a plot, flowers, fruits or vegetables, GEF is urging children to learn first-hand about the wonders of gardening and composting. Green Energy Challenge: In an effort to reduce energy consumption at school and at home,students will audit their classrooms, schools and homes to find energy leaks and correct them . Please review procedures here!
National Green Week 2011 is a FREE program. Schools and groups are encouraged to take this opportunity to spend time with their students discussing environmental issues and specifically what they can do to make a difference. Participate for the whole week, a day, or just one lesson or activity. On Earth Day 2011 (April 22 ) the GEF website will announce the impact of the combined efforts on behalf of all of the schools and green keepers.
Online Community
GEF’s website hosts the largest online global community dedicated to environmental education, serving as the world’s leading social networking site for K-12 educators. Participants can upload videos, photos, create groups and share best practices discovered in their communities with other participants nationwide. Green in-Action Awards
These awards will be granted to schools, classes, or groups of green keepers. Send in your photos, videos, and artwork describing your environmental projects, weigh-in, activity, community service projects, or GEF eco-challenge program to
