Why Plant 10,000 Gardens?

Planting a TreeThat sounds like an awfully big number.

Well, it IS a big number! The Green Thumb Challenge is a challenge after all, designed for our country's schools and youth groups to work together as part of a movement for change. And while the bad news out there can seem insurmountable sometimes - the reports we hear about climate change and pollution, about unhealthy Americans and unhealthy lifestyles, this is something that you can DO. It doesn't need to cost much money, or require many resources - it's really up to you. You can plant a small garden or a big garden, in classroom pots or outdoor plots. Every garden, no matter its size, will add more beauty and more life to what had been there before. Gardening is easy - and fun. Kids will be excited to get their hands in the soil, to learn while using all their senses, to watch a seedling bloom into a flower, and to taste their very first homegrown vegetable.

And that's why every garden is included in the Green Thumb Challenge.

School gardening is not new, but it is gaining ground, led by a powerful group of committed citizens and visionaries who understand the significance of kids sowing their own seeds. You too can join the movement to get youth outside, connected with nature, and gardening.
