True Temper EcoGardener™ Tools

The EcoGardener™ Tools are the best solution for environmentally conscious gardeners. The tools are made from sustainable materials including fast-growing bamboo for the handles and recycled steel for the shovel heads. These tools are just as tough as their "traditional" counterparts. The bamboo handles are not hollow, but constructed with strips of bamboo pressed together to form a solid handle, but made from renewable resources, providing users with a responsible green alternative. With the addition of EcoGardener, green enthusiasts can reduce their impact on the environment by using tools made with bamboo handles and blades made from recycled steel. Bamboo is unique in that it grows in a variety of climates and geographic locations and replenishes much more rapidly than traditional hardwoods.

Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable
Ames True Temper is proud of its long-standing environmental stewardship, and one example can be seen in our wood handle production.  Many of our tools feature Northern Ash or Hickory handles.  These handles are produced by our wood mills that are located in a specific region of the Appalachian Mountains distinguished as “verified sustainable” using US Forestry Service data.  In that region, forests naturally replenish at a rate of 2.29 trees for every tree harvested, which occurs without manual replanting efforts or chemical applications.

Dynamic Design™ EcoGardener™ Planters

EcoGardener™ Planters are a new line of stylish, renewable, durable and biodegradable planters. All planters in the EcoGardener line take 20 percent less energy to produce and are made from sustainable, natural materials including rice chaff, bamboo fibers, natural binders and natural colorant. Homeowners can eventually dispose of the planters without impacting the environment because the EcoGardener Planters are biodegradable and will fade into the environment as they decompose leaving no carbon footprint. The EcoGardener Planters come in a variety of colors and styles that appeal to varying tastes.

Our History
Ames, founded in 1774, only manufactured shovels for much of its history. However, over the last three decades, Ames acquired several companies to expand its product lines and geographical reach.

Founded in 1809 in Vermont, True Temper started as a manufacturer of agricultural products, particularly shovels and other digging tools. Like Ames, True Temper also expanded its product lines through acquisitions.

Ames True Temper® was formed in 1999 when Ames and its then parent, US Industries, Inc. (“USI”), acquired True Temper from the Huffy Corporation, combining two non-powered landscaping products companies with market leadership positions in long handle tools and wheelbarrows.

Since January 2002, we have completed multiple acquisitions to complement our product portfolio and enhance our sourcing capabilities.
