Boys & Girls Clubs of America programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.
As part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America United We Serve Initiative (June-September 2010), Club members across the country will conduct service projects focusing on three key areas: the environment, reduction of learning loss, and fitness and health. For Clubs interested in participating in environment-focused projects, BGCA has selected GEF's Green Thumb Challenge Website as the one-stop community/youth gardening resource. Even if you have never planted a garden before, you will be supplied with all of the information that you need to get your kids growing, and green your Boys & Girls Club!
GEF's Green Thumb Challenge is the largest youth gardening initiative in history, calling on schools and youth groups to plant 10,000 gardens. The program website, www.greenthumbchallenge.org supplies participants with all of the resources necessary to grow gardens of any size.
Simply follow these four easy steps, and your Club will be provided with all of the informational resources necessary to start and maintain a garden - indoors or outdoors, in flower pots or on vegetable plots, in windowsills or rooftops!
1. Sign up for the Green Thumb Challenge program. (This is free, and will only take a minute). Your registration will count your youth group as part of the 10,000 gardens nationwide goal. Additionally, you will gain full access to the GEF website, receive important garden-related announcements, and be eligible for program contests and the $5,000 grant.
2. Join the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Group on the GEF Online Community - stay connected and chart progress with other clubs across the country!
3. View the resources available to you on this website by visiting the Green Thumb Challenge homepage. Use the Get Ready, Get Set, Grow! sections to plan, plant, and maintain your garden.
4. For indoor and outdoor garden activities, visit the GEF Garden Activity Center. To find Pre K-12 standards-based lessons across subjects and grade levels, browse the Green Thumb Challenge curriculum library.
