Grow Your Own Herb Butter

Lesson Description:
Students will grow an herb garden! They will then use the herbs from their gardens to make seasoned butter.

Eco-Fact: Children and teenagers should be physically active for 60 minutes every day, or most every day.

Procedure:
  1. Pour heavy cream into jars and cover tightly with lids. Shake and shake!
  2. After some serious shaking (15-20 minutes or so – kids often share the task), the cream will solidify into butter. Now you can spoon out from the jar onto bread, or proceed with steps below to make specialty butters.
  3. First, spoon butter from jar into a bowl. Mix in salt to taste, and add herbs from the garden (i.e. parsley, thyme, basil, lavender, sage, rosemary, etc. – or a combination!).
  4. Spread onto bread or freshly steamed vegetables and enjoy!

Adaptations: - Students can take turns doing the cream shaking.
