Xcel Energy awards over $200,000 to local non-profits for work in education and the environment

June 21, 2012 – The Xcel Energy Foundation recently announced the recipients of over $200K in grant funding for non-profit organizations in Texas and New Mexico for work in education and the environment. Green Education Foundation (GEF) is proud to be among those selected for their reach and impact in making quality sustainability education available to youth and educators.

“Communities that value education and the environment are healthy communities,” said Riley Hill, president and CEO of Southwestern Public Service Company, an Xcel Energy company. “By supporting the nonprofits that promote these values, we hope to contribute to the overall health and prosperity of the communities we are privileged to serve.”

Through the Green Energy Challenge, GEF offers free sustainability lessons and activities related to energy conservation and the environment. This national program encourages students to make small changes their behaviors and then measure their collective impact. In doing so, lifelong habits of conservation are developed and can grow throughout communities organically.

The Green Energy Challenge is a free, national program for K-12 schools and community groups. To learn more about the Green Energy Challenge, visit www.greeneducationfoundation.org/green-energy-challenge-menu.
