A Home to Save

Earth is waiting.
Time is fading,
Faster if we don't choose to act
And better what we have.

To some it doesn't seem like we can do much,
But little things can change with a simple touch
Of working together hand and hand,
We can do better than just helping the land.

We can start by picking up the trash
That tumbles around until it makes a splash;
Into the ocean down it falls
One piece can potentially harm us all.

Think of all of Earth's creatures- not just you and me,
But even those under the sea.
They could lose their lives if we don't take care
Of all we use and all we wear.

Buy clothes organically made,
But that can still brighten your day.
You can still dress to impress,
Just know that you are helping the Earth become its best.

And even if you're worried about being "cool"
Those who don't help the Earth are the real fools.
Even the strongest things need help,
Not just the ones who have the guts to yelp.

Earth is the only one of its kind,
And it is up to the people from far and wide,
To keep and preserve wherever we go,
The Earth we have learned to love very so.

Sure together we've had our ups and downs;
We've damaged some of it from the air to the ground,
But we do have the chance to change out ways,
And to do it we'll need to take it day by day.

Whether by using our cars less,
And biking with more finesse,
Or choosing to recycle that soda can
Rather than rolling it across the land.

We can spread the word throughout the town,
And further by traveling around and around.
The world can change for good in a blink of an eye,
All we have to do is try.

We can make clubs in schools across the nations,
Making "going green" the next big sensation.
We'll be dedicated to keeping our planet clean,
From recycling to protecting our trees.

We can come back stronger than ever,
And make this earth even better.
Working together will make us strong
And together we'll find that this earth is where we belong.

We cannot give up on something that has never given up on us.
The earth keeps on spinning without a fuss.
We have the power to make a change,
Isn't your home something you want to save?

2) Upstate New York Winner

Holmes Elementary, Tonawanda, NY

One of the ways to make the Earth better is to not litter.
We cannot cut the trees. Recycle the paper.
We can plant more and more trees.
We can bring back the plastic, paper, glass, cans.
We can make a slide out of recycled plastic. We can plant trees for the animals.
Kids can plant flowers.
Adults can plant trees. All together we can do this.

Plants

We help plants. We help them so they can help us. Plants give us oxygen to breathe. We need oxygen to live. My school, P.S. 132, went to a library garden to plant some flowers. When trees are chopped down they die. Trees are a kind of plant. When plants die they lose their power to make oxygen. Trees and other plants have chlorophyll, which makes the oxygen that we breathe to live. I wrote a poem about trees.

Trees

Trees are the most beautiful things I know.
They don’t harm, they only grow.
They give a big shade in which cows lie, birds will make nests out of leaves, and branches will sway in the nice breeze.
We can play in the leaves and the leaves will sway in the beautiful breeze.
We can make a kite out of leaves and fly it in the warm breeze.

 Earth

Earth, earth my home since birth.

The more you plant seeds the more you grow trees.

The stuff you recycle might make a tricycle.

Even if you’re wealthy, recycle and keep the earth healthy.

Even though I’m a child and I can be wild, I still want the earth to be healthy.
