Outdoor Classroom
- An unused courtyard will be transformed into an outdoor learning space. This “outdoor classroom” will feature a variety of learning areas including a garden, gathering area, music and movement centers. This space can also be used to host guest speakers with a focus on environmental education.
- The educational goals of this project include skills dealing with science, literacy, math, music, and art. Students will learn about cycles, seasons, living and non-living. This area will encourage observation skills and recognizing shapes. Poetry can be created along with counting, measurement and geometry. This project will also focus on rhythm, sound, and three-dimensional art.
- Our outdoor classroom revolves around the environment. It is our main goal that students explore the natural world around them and foster their curiosity and imagination with natural materials and hands-on activities. It is also a chance to turn off classroom lights to conserve electricity.
- This area will benefit those students with disabilities using hands-on activities and free play. The activities will help improve cognitive, physical, and motor skills. Students will be encouraged to observe and sort collections (shells, rocks, etc.) and walk on balance beams and across log steps. This outdoor classroom will also help foster fine motor skills used to grasp garden tools and hand magnifiers. Students with sensory and attention issues will use nature to help focus and find positive ways to deal with anger and other behavioral concerns.
